# Why families host a Satyanarayan Katha

A new home. A new job or business. A wedding in the family. A recovery from illness. A wish quietly made and granted. The Satyanarayan Katha is how Hindu families say thank you — a puja and story recitation devoted to Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan, the embodiment of truth.

It is perhaps the most beloved of all home ceremonies because it is a family event: everyone sits together, hears the katha, and shares the prasad.

# What happens during the ceremony

• Sankalp — the family states the intention and gratitude behind the puja
• Ganesh and Navgrah invocation — the traditional opening
• Satyanarayan puja — offerings of panchamrit, fruits, flowers and the beloved sheera/panjiri prasad
• The katha's five chapters — stories of devotion, doubt and grace, narrated by the pandit
• Aarti and prasad — closing blessings shared by all

# The best days to host it

Purnima — the full moon — is the classic day for Satyanarayan Katha, and Thursdays (Guruvar, Lord Vishnu's day) are equally cherished. Ekadashi is also auspicious. The exact tithi shifts month to month, so tell us your preferred week and we confirm the right date from the panchang.
